Sportshall Event 4 2019/20 Season

The fourth Sportshall event took place at Bicester Leisure Centre on Sunday 23rd February 2020. We were represented by a small but enthusiastic team of just seven athletes who demonstrated some fantastic team spirit. Oxford City was one of seven clubs competing from across the region.
We had four athletes representing the U11 boys, two representing the U11 girls and a sole athlete in the U13 boys’ category. Unfortunately this meant that we couldn’t field a full team for any of the age groups which significantly hampered our scoring potential but it was an enjoyable experience nonetheless and many thanks to all who took part. Thank you also to the parents who came along to support and also to Denise, Wendy and Elton for organising everybody.
Our first event was the U11 boys’ obstacle relay in which we came fourth. We faced stiff competition in the U11 boys’ one lap race and despite some strong individual performances, finished sixth overall. We were more successful in the three lap race where we were placed joint third. We didn’t have a big enough team to be able to enter the speed bounce or the standing long jump but finished in a respectable third place for the soft javelin.
Our two U11 girls performed well in their events – Jessica won her heat of the one lap race and Amie demonstrated excellent technique in the speed bounce, coming joint second in her heat. A special mention must go to Connor who was our single representative in the U13 boys’ category and jumped well in the standing long jump, coming second in his heat.
Overall, Oxford City finished last in both the U11 and U13 age groups. However, this is not a reflection of our athletes’ performances but simply because we didn’t have enough athletes to enter all the events and so missed out on a lot of potential points. We desperately need more athletes to sign up for these competitions in order to be competitive. These events are fun, fast paced and friendly so please consider signing up – the next one (and the last for this season) will be held on Sunday 29th March in Wantage.
