Adam’s Decathlon Success

Published: 9 July 2021

Adam Davenport was the sole Oxford representative to survive two days of multi-event competition at Horspath last weekend (July 3-4), in the South of England Combined Events Championships, and throughout the competition he had a hand on the medals. Competing in the men’s u20 decathlon, he lay second at the end of day one, following a string of personal bests. His performances on day 1 were: 100m (12.56s), Long Jump (5m), Shot (9.16m), High Jump (1.56m) and 400m (55.17s). The following morning he recorded a fast time of 18.76s in the 110mH, before throwing 26.60 in discus, and jumping 2.20m in pole vault, before a good throw of 32.10m in javelin consolidated his second place going into the final event, the 1500m. Finishing with a creditable 5:28.41s, and a combined total of 4153 points, Adam was over 700 points clear of the 3rd placed athlete from Andover, but an equivalent distance behind the Swindon Harriers winner. In what was only his second full decathlon, Adam’s performance improves his position in the top 30 competitors in the UK in his age group, and gave him silver medal in the South Region championships.Β
