Successful Fortnight for Club and Team Marriott

Published: 17 July 2018

The past fortnight has seen a succession of achievements for Oxford City athletes, all coached by Marcia and Ian Marriott. On July 7th and 8th Alice Hopkins followed her recent win in the British long jump (U23)championships by winning the South of England senior Heptathlon title at Horspath with a new personal best score of 5336 points, including new personal bests in six out of her seven events, and moving her to tenth in the national senior rankings. A week later her training partner Jade O’Dowda donned her first GB vest to take part in the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, where she entered the contest ranked 16th in the world and emerged in 7th place overall, setting a personal best score for the third time this year – 5660 points. This points score keeps her in third place in the national senior heptathlon rankings where she is chasing Niamh Emerson (winner of the gold medal in Tampere) and Katerina Johnson-Thompson, Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist. It also put her in 11th place in the global u20 heptathlon rankings.

The medal winning streak continued for Ella Turner, who won Bronze medal at the English Schools championships in Birmingham on Saturday 14th, finishing strongly to set a new club record of 54.74s in the senior 400m race.

Congratulations too to Georgie Bristow and Daisy Palmer who also represented Oxfordshire and their club with great distinction in the intermediate girls age group.
