Sportshall Match 1 2019/20 season
Published: 8 November 2019
Match 1 of the Sportshall series took place at Bicester Leisure Centre on Sunday 20th Oct. Thank you to all the athletes who joined us for this event, thank you to the parents who helped out at the event and a big thank you to Wendy who made sure we were all in the right place at the right time during the afternoon! Oxford were one of the seven teams competing from across the region.
We were a small team of 15 athletes that competed for Oxford.
A special call out to 6 members who were new to this event:
U11 girls – Lucy, Natasha and Asia
U11 boys – Reuben and Nicholas
U13 boys – Maciej
As new parents to this type of event, we were unsure what to expect. There were a few of us in the same position with children competing for the first time. We found that Sportshall is a fun, fast paced, indoor competition. The atmosphere was positive with great support for the team. The children made new friends and really pulled together as a team. As a parent there were lots of opportunities to offer organisational support. Myself and two other parents ran the vertical jump event which was daunting at first, but after some instruction we were responsible for setting up the jump, organising the athletes and recording the scores. We all found the experience enjoyable.
The match started with the obstacle race. Our under 11 girls (Asia, Eleanor, Evie, Lucy, Natasha) were the only Oxford team to compete in this event. It was their favourite and they did well scoring 4 points and coming 4th overall. The girls also did well in the chest push scoring 4 points and coming 4th again. The U11 boys Nicholas and Reuben did very well in the Vertical Jump coming 3rd with 5 points.
In the U13 boys group we were represented by 3 athletes: Habib, Maalik and Maciej. Their best event was the 8 lap paarlauf where we scored 4 points. We weren’t represented in every event and the older age group athletes did a sterling job in representing Oxford on their own in each group. Matilda was the sole girl competing in the girls U13 group and took part in the two laps, triple jump and vertical jump. In the U15 we also only had one athlete in each group with Nasrin (U15 G, twolaps and vertical jump) and Rasool (U15 B, shot) representing the Oxford team.
Overall in Match 1, Oxford City came 6th in both the U11 and U13 age groups and 4th in the U15 group in Match 1. Our small team did a great job and really enjoyed this first match, but we were under represented in this first event and really need more members to come along and represent the team. It’s fun and friendly and our children had a fantastic time. The next match is on Sunday Nov 17th in Kidlington. Sign up on the board to give it a go!
